Major Lazer ‘Get Free’ (feat Amber Coffman)

Featuring Amber Coffman from Dirty Projectors, this slice of left field Balearic pop is definitely up there in my top five (so far) of 2012. Like all the best pop it’s melodically unforgettable and sonically timely; but this one snatches the prize because it is also so prescient, so topical, so NOW. Lyrically it’s a […]

Kindness ‘World, You Need A Change Of Mind’ (Polydor)

What’s this, a major label release on Heads Down? Indeed: this is an album that actually deserves the financial might, promotion and distribution a major can offer. Adam Bainbridge’s debut is a Philippe Zdar-produced (he of Cassius and Motorbass fame) thing of sun-soaked joy. It’s had some dodgy write-ups: “It’s classy and airy, although so […]

Gary Numan Interview

There’s not a lot I need to say about this guy. Pioneering synth fanatic, androgynous 80’s industrial pop legend. Pollyn ‘Can’t Get Into It’ (Bottin Remix)

Ok. I kind of feel like I’ve been neglecting my post-punk Gauloise-smoking, Supreme Vans-wearing peeps for a while, which is why I thought I should post this upfront and infectious little pop-post-disco banger on the blog. Bottin‘s obviously like family here at Heads Down (watch the interview), so when I heard the remix I thought […]

San Serac ‘Music Never Ends’ (Environ)

Now what have we here? A Godzilla-sized pop record on the┬áMorgan Geist owned Environ label. So I’m betting that San Serac made some kind of drunken proclamation to Morgan Geist that he could write a hit pop record “this frikkin weekend” if Morgan Geist would, in turn, put it out (I’ve made- and lost- these […]

Desire ‘Don’t Call’ (Italians Do It Better)

Italians Do It Better are, for my money, one of the greatest independent record labels in the world, bar none. Their roster of artists is like a who’s who of the contemporary east coast underground: Glass Candy, Chromatics, Mirage, Nite Jewel, Bottin (the only Italy-based Italian)… I could go on. But I think their reach […]
