System Status ‘Downtime’ (Untracked Recordings)

System Status is a man called David Rendle, a longtime music obsessive who seems to have been padding away on his home setup for years before suddenly busting out with this intimidatingly competent debut, fully formed as a producer (don’t you hate those guys?).

This is the last record on my erstwhile label Untracked Recordings that I’m associated with in an A&R sense; I’m so happy that it’s turned out to be a stone cold killer.

‘Downtime’ has a whiff of Theo Parrish about it, without ever biting his sound; the main sample is presented and looped in all it’s crackle-laden soul-soaked glory and creates a gorgeous counter to the fizzing synths that are introduced later in the record. It rolls out so languidly that you’re reminded this isn’t for the majority of dancefloors (maybe that fantasy ‘4am dancefloor’ that sales notes writers keep banging on about), this is in essence for the heads at home. That’s not to say it ain’t heavy, because by crikey it is. ‘Boom’ is the word I’m looking for.

It goes without saying that this is, unequivocally, a name to watch. Buy it here.
